Ocean Sensory Bin

This week, we finally made the ocean sensory bin with jello that I have been planning forever! There were a few fails on my part though that made it not turn out as planned, but we still had fun anyway and that's all that counts.

First of all, I had to use 8 boxes of jello and it still only turned out to be this much. I waited too long to add the sea animals and therefore it messed up the smoothness of the top (to give it the appearance of water).

Here is one of our sharks. Also, I tried putting these flat plastic glow-in-the-dark fish in, but not realizing that it would be very difficult to get enough light to them to make them glow once the jello set. But it's ok because we decided to take this messy project outside anyway.

He was a little tentative to put his hands in at first.

Then I showed him that he could eat it.

That really got him going and that's pretty much all he wanted to do after that.

We had a fun, messy time.

I finally got him to dig out some of the fish and he started making a pile of them on the bench, so I got him a bowl to collect them in.

Here's little man all jello-ed up!

Here is the aftermath!

Afterwards, we used the jello boxes to build with!

Enjoy and happy jello-ing :)

Neon Worm Picnic- Sensory Play

I have been wanting to do this activity that I found over at Tutus & Tea Parties for quite some time now: Colored Spaghetti Sensory Play. There is a great video over there that shows exactly how to color the spaghetti as well.

Well, here is how our colored spaghetti "worms" as I call them, turned out.

But, we decided to do ours more of a picnic style. I got out some of L's picnic set and some other cereal bowls and a spaghetti scoop.

Here he is serving me up some yummy spaghetti! Although the tongs would have worked better than a spatula, I wanted him to figure that out on his own.

Digging right in!

I set up a sorting station as well, but L wasn't too interested in this. Although I have seen him sort colored blocks before, I did this one on my own.

L really enjoyed this one. It is the longest I have seen him stay at one sensory bin recently. I hope the noodles stay good for a while in the ziplock freezer bag so we can keep using them!

Farm Sensory Bin With Spanish Moss

Here is our most recent sensory bin. It includes a pack of farm animals from Walmart that also came with the fences and trees, a Little People tractor, and the filler is spanish moss from Dollar Tree.

My little man loved the tractor the best. He is a huge fan of cars and anything with wheels.

He also liked pulling apart the pieces of spanish moss.

I liked the spanish moss as a base for this sensory bin because it resembles hay, but I can also see using it for lots of different kinds of sensory bins.

If you would like some more resources on this topic, see past posts on farm activities, farm books, and more farm books. Here are some books to go along with farm animals:

Jungle Sensory Bin

Our most recent sensory bin we've been playing with is jungle animals! My son is starting to say the names of the animals, so I thought this would be a good reinforcement.

The materials I used include dry oatmeal for the base, a jungle animal play set ($3.00 at Walmart), and a cutout circle for a pond. I used scrapbook paper that looks like water.

He really enjoyed playing in it until the oatmeal started flying. Then it was time for clean-up!
