Playdough Cupcakes with Sprinkles

This week, we are beginning our study on pets. We are reading this great book, If you Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff. I love this series of books. They are so great for sequencing and retelling. Then, since my class has been so into playdough recently, I decided to put a little twist on that.

We made cupcakes with playdough and then added "sprinkles" on the top using glitter. The children had so much fun with this activity. To add a little more literacy to this, I had them choose a friend to make their cupcake for and write the friend's name on a card. If they couldn't write the letters on their own, I made the letters with dotted lines for them to trace.

What have you done with this book or any of the "If you Give a..." books?

Birthday Board

Here is the birthday board we did this year. Each cupcake has a month on it and will have the childrens' names whose birthdays are in that month clipped to the ribbon hanging from it.

At my center, we are not allowed to let parents bring in cake or any food for birthdays, so we made a birthday basket where they can choose a prize on their birthday.
What did you do for birthdays in your classroom?

Mini Fall Cupcakes

Here are some fall cupcakes I made to take to my hubby's work today. Chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese icing and sprinkles. They are mini cupcakes and I used little cupcake wrappers with a pumpkin design.

Yum Yum!

Storytime Sunday

I am going to be totally honest, I had no idea what I was going to post for Storytime Sunday today, so I decided to check out what I could find on Pinterest. Good old Pinterest, always pulls through. Here are some of the pins I found:

First, this pin links to Shannon's Book Nook. A wonderful read-aloud resource. She gives lots of tips about reading aloud, activities to do with different books and a great list of children's books. I would highly recommend checking it out!

Second, this awesome idea to make placemats out of pages of books. This is a good idea for books that are falling apart, or you could photo copy the pages as well.

Third, no party is complete without cupcakes! Check out these children's book cupcakes! So creative, I love it.

And lastly, here is something that I thought was just plain cool:

Happy reading (and pinning!)
