Chronicles of Summertime: Day 31

Over the weekend, we went to some yard sales and my parents came to visit. Snugglepuppy swung on his swing, shot his new water squirter, and did his outdoor scavenger hunt using this printable. Here are some of the things we found on the scavenger hunt:
Spider Web
Helicopter Seed
Moss
Pine Cone
Natural Letter (I)
Pine Tree
And one that wasn't on the list, but Snugglepuppy thought was cool, a seed.

I got all this for $5 at yard sales and a foldable stepper for $25!
Day 31:
Today, grandma and grandpa ate breakfast with us and then went home. We had to run to Walmart for a few things and both kids were very good on the trip. Snugglepuppy played on his own while I cleaned house and Ladybug slept, then we got into some art. He painted and drew with crayons. He started getting really fussy and so had a very late nap. After that, he only had time to eat dinner before bed. That was it for today, nothing too exciting.

Outdoor Letter Hunt

For this activity, we placed laminated alphabet cards (printed side down) all around the ground on the soccer field.

Then, we passed out small foam letters to each child.

Then, the kids were off searching for their letter! Since they were face down, the children had to turn each one over until they found their match.

They had an awesome time! This is a great way to take your literacy outside and get some exercise in the process. Learning to read and write doesn't have to happen sitting at a table.

The kids did a great job and helped the others who were having a little bit of trouble. This can also be a good cooperative activity. Maybe you could pair the children up and give one the upper case and the other the lower case of the same letter. Please share your results if you try this activity!

Happy Hunting!

Prep for Vet Study

Here are some of the things I got ready for this week's study on vets.

First, I made my own pretend bandages using felt and velcro.
Next, I made an Open/Closed sign for the kids to color and decorate and hang in the vet's office and the actual office sign below. Or if they are so inclined, to make a sign by themselves.

Next is an Animal Scavenger Hunt. They will take this out with them at outdoor time and circle any animal they see. Each child will also take an extra sheet home to do as homework with their families. They are also encouraged to count and write how many animals they found and where they found each animal.

Here are some tags I got ready for the children to write prices on and attach them to some of the items for sale at the pet store (We still have pet store set up in block area)

For our sensory table, I added things a vet might use, including cotton balls, tweezers, tongue depressors, and the homemade bandages.

Our word wall words for the week.
Our morning message for the week.

I'm pretty sure the kids are ready for this lesson as they have been "fixing up" injured and sick animals for a while now!
