Playdough Cupcakes with Sprinkles

This week, we are beginning our study on pets. We are reading this great book, If you Give a Cat a Cupcake by Laura Numeroff. I love this series of books. They are so great for sequencing and retelling. Then, since my class has been so into playdough recently, I decided to put a little twist on that.

We made cupcakes with playdough and then added "sprinkles" on the top using glitter. The children had so much fun with this activity. To add a little more literacy to this, I had them choose a friend to make their cupcake for and write the friend's name on a card. If they couldn't write the letters on their own, I made the letters with dotted lines for them to trace.

What have you done with this book or any of the "If you Give a..." books?

Chronicles of Summertime: Day 6

I will start with some things we did over the weekend. We went to the library's Summer Reading Program Kick-off. Snugglepuppy had lots of fun and met Maisy and made Maisy ears to wear. He made a sand castle and saw a magic show. He also got his face painted and a tattoo!

We also went to COSI, our local children's science museum. Snugglepuppy played in the water area and saw the Mythbuster's exhibit for daddy's birthday.

I actually did a post about this water area at COSI earlier and here is a list of things kids can learn here:

Mythbusters Exhibit

We stopped by the Art Festival that was going on downtown near COSI and had a look around and a bite of food. It was a fun weekend!

Day 6:
Today was another RAINY lazy day. We didn't do too much in the morning. Snugglepuppy played with his castle he made at the library using playdough and cars. He built a road for his cars with it. Then, after cleaning that up, we started reading some library books for the summer reading program. He liked the 3 Little Pigs and helped the wolf (he calls it a dog) blow down the houses. Then we read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons. As an extension, we watched the Youtube video of Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes.

And lastly, we made the fruit and yogurt parfait from Snugglepuppy's Highlights High Five Magazine.

Crushing the graham crackers.

Smashing the raspberries (we changed the recipe a little).

Adding the graham crackers on top.

The final product.

Digging in!

More Snow Activities

Snow Painting: Mix equal parts glue and shaving cream. It dries puffy! So we drew an outdoor scene and added the snow.

Playdough snowman.

Here is an activity we did to work on the -at family words using snowflakes outlines and letter stamps. The children stamped letters in the circles around the edge of the snowflake that could make a word when added to the beginning of -at.

Here is the home enrichment activity we sent home. The children were to draw a picture of what the current weather is like in the country their family is from. I love the results we got!
